All of us have things we want. Not everyone turns these desires into actual actions. Often that’s because we don’t take the time to actually make a plan or implement it. If we really intend to get something or create a new habit, an essential tool is an “implementation intention”. It sounds more daunting than it is. It’s simply a structured sentence, but there’s a ton of research on its value in getting things done.
Here’s how it works: If ______, then ________.
- If it’s 6am, then I’ll attend a workout class.
- If I’m feeling stressed, then I’ll take a deep breath and write down the top three things I want to get done.
- If I am craving something sweet, then I’ll drink a glass of water first.
What are you really intending?

Some Things I Read Last Week:
- NYT: Study Examines Why Black Americans Remain Scarce in Executive Suites “If corporate America wants to create a more equitable and inclusive workplace…it needs not a Band-Aid but an intervention.”
- Fortune: Why 90% of the Investors in This New Silicon Valley Venture Fund Are Women “The fund’s differentiator…isn’t just that it taps into such a diverse group of qualified (yet under-utilized) investors. It’s also that it taps into a group of execs whose unique experience is valuable to entrepreneurs.”
What I’m Working On This Week:
If I’m feeling fear/self-doubt, then I’ll power pose.
