the residual fear of the truth

There’s a funny dichotomy about “truth”. On the one hand, we want to hear what people think of us and we’re wary when people aren’t open and upfront. On the other hand, we’re afraid of what we might hear.

The fear typically isn’t rational. Most of us are actually afraid of the pain that we anticipate we’ll feel if someone says a statement we don’t like, or don’t agree with, or don’t think is accurate. It’s not their truth that hurts, it’s the stories and beliefs we have about ourselves that are painful. Until we make this distinction, we’ll continue to avoid really looking at what is true about other people’s feedback. And until we face what’s true, we can’t actually have the deep relationships we most desire.
