our inner critic’s analyses are crap

We filter feedback through our inner critic’s selective hearing process, which means that we don’t actually hear what was said, we hear a statement that has been edited and shaped by our critic’s beliefs and biases. In these moments it’s easiest to internalize it, but in doing so we take falsified data as truth. What would it take to say in response, “I just heard [add inner critic’s summary here], is that what you said?”
