We tend to think in absolutes—things are either safe or unsafe, good or bad, right or wrong. There are times when this type of a “brain sort” is useful—it helps us learn from mistakes, remove our hand from a hot stove top, etc. It’s also our brain’s attempt to create shortcuts. And sometimes in the process of putting things into either/or categories, we cut off opportunities and pathways we don’t realize are available to us.
In between absolutes is the space to create the experiences we want to have. What we decide to create is up to us—ideally we lean towards the highest good that we can, for ourselves and others.
