Bandages are not designed to be long term solutions. Their purpose is to protect a wound while it’s healing. It’s easy to get accustomed to the comfort and security of a bandage. Seeking comfort and security is natural. However, we don’t flourish in bandages. They enable us to keep the mindset that we are broken.
Therefore ripping the bandaid off isn’t just a saying, it is also a statement of growth: I refuse to see myself/this situation/this other person as needing to be fixed, because it wasn’t broken in the first place. Once we distinguish between what needs healing and what we’ve deemed to be broken, we can heal what needs to heal, and rip the bandaid off the things that really aren’t broken.
